5 Resolutions for Entrepreneurs

#1. Get to know your finances. The worst thing you can do as a business owner is to be out of touch with your own financial situation. Staying in the know and being involved in keeping everything on track is the way to get it done. If your financial situation needs an overhaul, this is the year to reel it in and get it all lined out for success and organization. Don’t be afraid to work with someone who knows the business of accounting too – sometimes bringing in the pros is the name of the game.

#2 Make a commitment to growing your skills as a leader. Leadership is what takes most businesses from A to B – and sometimes you need a little guidance to get there. Investing in yourself and in your leadership style is one of the best investments you can make in your business. Without a solid leader, things can’t grow and with one, the sky is the limit.

#3. Find a work life balance. This is key to being a great business owner – when you’re excited to head to work in the morning because you’ve had enough time to rest the night before. This is a tough one, especially if you’re just starting out – your inclination is to work around the clock. But, here’s the thing: that does nothing good for anyone. Getting the rest you need and the quality time with family and loved ones is so important to life and in the long run, will make you a better business owner too.

#4. Make strategic hires. If you’re at the point where you’re growing your business enough to hire a team, be thoughtful and strategic about who and how you make that happen. Don’t simply hire the first person you meet. Hire based on experience and on whether or not he or she will work well in the culture you’ve created at your business. You want 2017 to operate like a well-oiled machine – think about the type of person and work experience you need to make that happen.

#5. Reignite your passion. If you’re at that point in the business cycle where you’ve lost your drive and your passion to succeed, it’s time to reassess and figure out where it’s gone – and how to get it back. Perhaps you got burnt out working too many hours last year, and finding that work-life balance is number one on your to do list. Maybe all you need is to infuse a little creativity into your daily work life. Whatever it is, get after it!
