Selfie is 2013’s Word of the Year

We all do it! With a slew of new words dominating our conversations this year (twerking, anyone?), Oxford Dictionary has proclaimed “selfie” as the 2013 Word of the Year. Taking a picture of yourself by yourself qualifies as a selfie and these photos have dominated Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, with celebs like Kim Kardashian and Beyonce leading the way.

According to People Magazine, the term was first used on an Australian internet forum back in 2002 “detailing a drunken injury” writing, “sorry about the focus, it was a selfie.” Who knew?
