Dove Beauty Sketches Video Campaign Takes the Internet by Storm

There’s been quite a buzz this week surrounding the latest segment of the Dove Beauty CampaignDove Beauty Sketches. If you haven’t watched the video, you should. It’s just a few minutes and it may change the way you think about yourself (it actually moved me to tears). While the original Dove campaign showed women of all shapes and sizes looking gorgeous in plain white underwear and bras, the new Beauty Sketches campaign takes on a whole new issue: the way we see ourselves.

Dove Beauty Sketches Video Campaign Takes the Internet by Storm

This Dove project involves a forensic artist and a handful of women. Without looking at them, he has the women describe their own appearance and later someone else describes them too. The artist creates two portraits for each woman; there is one photo that reflects the way she sees herself and then a second, showing the way a stranger sees her. The results of the portraits are staggering and look completely different.

The women describe themselves in a negative way, “I kind of have a fat, rounder face” versus the positive description by others, “She had blue eyes, very nice blue eyes”, “She was thin, so you could see her cheekbones.” When the portraits are revealed, it’s pretty emotional. The women realize quickly that they are their own harshest critics and that they each are more beautiful than they think.
