Why Couples Who Work Together, Stay Together

As we prepared to kick off MAIC 2014 today, I found myself thinking back on past Market America Conventions.  As I reminisced, I came across pictures of JR and I, and of Amber and Duane, both enjoying our time at MAIC. But, more importantly, enjoying the rewards of being able to work on our own terms and reap the rewards of building a business we believe in. When JR and I began building our vision for Market America 22 years ago, we supported each other and focused on attaining a goal we both could agree on and look forward to. And now Amber and Duane are able to work together on a line they are so passionate about, DNA Miracles. So, it begs the question: Do couples who work together have a better chance of staying together? Do they thrive because they also share a work vision? Read ahead for a list of virtues for those who choose to marry their careers and relationships and how to balance the two.

Couples Who Work Together, Stay Together

More time together – While it can be tricky to balance so much time together, if you’re working on the same project, rather than working in separate jobs, you’ll share more time together. Balance that with time away from work as well, so as not to forget that you’re also a beautiful pair outside of the boardroom.

A shared vision – Working together will teach you how to work together towards a shared vision even when times are tough, something you’ll want to apply in your personal lives as well.

Professional respect – Working together will allow you to see your partner in a different light than you would at home, often leading to respecting them in a professional way in a first-hand capacity, rather than simply from second-hand accounts.

Better communication skills – Running a business together isn’t easy, but the reward is that it will certainly toughen up your relationship and teach you how to communicate and navigate even in difficult moments, something that will certainly be an asset to your romantic relationship.

Support & Motivation – Having the opportunity to support and motivate your partner towards achieving their goals takes on a new meaning when you share the same goal and can be there, first-hand, to see it all come to fruition. Supporting and motivating each other in both personal and professional settings is a relationship builder not too many couples can enjoy. Be sure to have each other’s backs through both.
