5 Ways to Conquer Your Personal Fears

#1. First of all, assess your fears. You know you are afraid of something, but you may not be exactly sure what that is. Spend some time self-reflecting to nail down and figure out what that fear might be. Sometimes a fear might feel like one thing, but when you sit with it and really begin to understand it, you learn it’s actually deeply rooted in something else entirely. In a nutshell, get to the bottom of your fear.

#2. Once you have a better understanding of the root of your fear, stay focused on how to deal with that particular fear and the situations that make it more prevalent. Let’s say you have a fear of flying – come to terms with what it is about flying that you’re actually afraid of. And, is your fear more about leaving home, separation etc, or the actual flying?

#3. Develop a routine. Sometimes when your fear is situational, having a routine can help you cope much more easily. Let’s say you’re fearful of public speaking, but it’s required of you at your job. Having a routine – like a practice process, a glass of water, breathing exercises before you present – all of those things can help you cope much more easily. Knowing that you have all the tools you need available to you will help set a stage of confidence rather than leaving you with questions.

#4. Find ways to lessen the anxiety in other areas of your life. When you’re fearful of one thing in particular, it’s typically quite manageable. The problem starts to occur when other aspects of your life become overwhelmingly stressful and full of anxiety, that fear can become easily inflated and sometimes larger than life. The key is finding balance in everything else to give you a nice basis and foundation for dealing with your fear.

#5. Practice breathing exercises, yoga and meditation to calm the mind. It sounds so simple, but you’d be amazed at how bringing your breathing to a calm and level place, takings some time to focus on the present and learning to use mediation can be tools for success when it comes to dealing with fear. Don’t be shy about taking the necessary time away from the hustle and bustle of your day to focus on using relaxing techniques such as breathing or mediation to help mediate your fear. You are the only person who can change the course of how that fear plays into your life – make dealing with it your priority.

Do you have a fear that you have trouble dealing with? Could any of these ideas help you conquer it?
