We’ve all been there. Left holding the pieces of a relationship that finally came to an end. No matter if it was time to move on or if you were caught off guard and are entirely broken-hearted, breakups feel terrible. It’s a significant change. You go from doing everything with another person to being left to figure out how to navigate life solo. It feels lonely, scary, and sometimes all you can think about is getting back together. Here’s the thing: you can move on. You WILL move on. Eventually, you’ll establish a new life for yourself, one that leaves you more satisfied, happier and fulfilled – you just have to get there. Here are some ideas for how.

Make your home your own. Were you previously living with someone? It’s time to give your house or apartment a makeover to be just what you want, on your terms. OR, better yet, you move and find something that’s 100% yours. Having an environment built by you, that’s exactly what you want is so essential to helping you find your independence and new life as a single person. Once you know where you’re going to live, make it yours by adding paint, décor, new bedding – whatever makes you feel good!

Hit the gym. There’s nothing better for getting over something than letting your aggression out with some good old-fashioned exercise. You’ll be amazed at what you can do when you have pent up emotions. Take on a new class at the gym like spinning or Zumba, or maybe it’s time to start that kickboxing class you’ve been thinking about for a while. Whatever it is, use the breakup as fuel to be your absolute best self. You’ll end up feeling great and looking great too.

Out with the old. Rid yourself and your home of anything that leaves you feeling drab. It’s the perfect time to give your closet a total overhaul and donate or sell clothes, shoes, and accessories that you just don’t need anymore. Donate or sell everything and rebuild your wardrobe back up with new items that make you feel fabulous.

Learn to cook. This may sound silly, but cooking can be so incredibly cathartic. If you’ve never taken the time to cook, now’s your chance. Find cooking shows, take a class or even get all the cookbooks you find interesting and spend some real time in the kitchen. Maybe this is your chance to get super focused on a specific type of cooking – you never know what you’ll find.

Host a monthly book club. Is this the sort of thing you always wanted to do, but never could because you were too focused on your relationship? Happens to all of us…without a doubt, but now is your chance to change that. Get all your best girls (and guys!) together for a book club. Pick a list of books you’ve been interested in reading and get to it. Have a book a month and then host a fun night to drink wine, eat great snacks and chat about the book. So much fun and a great way to spend your time focused and reading during the week.

Some of these ideas are a bit unconventional, but you can do this. Even if the time alone feels utterly endless right now after your breakup, it will be OK – but you have to give yourself some time to heal and reinvent. How have you handled breakups in the past
