How to Become the Most Likable Person in the Room

  • Be open, and I'm not just talking in conversation. I get it, sometimes anxiety gets in the way and we get nervous, making our body language seem unapproachable. We end up coming off as aloof or uninterested. Put your arms down, smile, take a deep breath and relax. It's all about becoming aware of how you're coming off to others. Nerves are a real thing but try to calm them down and focus on exuding confidence.
  • Use your listening skills. My grandkids are in their first years of school and a big lesson that they have to utilize on an everyday basis is to listen to their teachers. Go back to your kindergarten days and open your ears. When you meet someone, listen to everything they're saying. A trick I use is to repeat every word that comes out of someone else's mouth in my own head. That way, you get all the details. If you cut the conversation, you make people feel like you're shutting them down. No one wants that!
  • Mimick others as discreetly as possible. As sophisticated as we think we are, we're actually naturally synchronizing ourselves to others. This begins in infancy: babies naturally imitate the facial expressions of those around them. Do thi so people feel comfortable.
  • Ask questions when you're starting a conversation. People love to know that you're listening and they love to talk about themselves. Questions get the other person talking and engaged in a conversation, but the trick is knowing what questions to ask. Keep things open-ended so you allow others to offer their opinion.
