Is Plastic Surgery Misunderstood?

Plastic surgery is one of the most misunderstood types of medical procedure that we have today.  A lot of people who don’t know much about plastic surgery assume that its only function is to stretch and sculpt the face in order to achieve an unnaturally youthful or beautiful appearance.   This is simply not the case.   As helpful and relevant websites such as http://www.aboutplasticsurgery.com/ can help us to begin to understand, there are numerous types of plastic surgery available for a wide range of different types of patients.

Of course, many people do choose to undergo plastic surgery in order to give their faces an appearance of preserved youth.  However, this does not mean that a post-operation face has to look like a mannequin or that it has to appear stretched.  In fact, one of the most common facial plastic surgeries is simply the injection of collagen beneath the surface of the skin.  This type of procedure essentially entails putting small amounts of fat into your skin where it is loose or wrinkled, in order to fill it out and keep you looking young and relaxed.

Another commonly misunderstood type of plastic surgery is breast augmentation.  Many people think that the only type of breast-altering surgery available to patients is geared toward enlargement.  In reality, however, there are also breast augmentation procedures designed to reduce size, reshape, and even reconstruct breasts.  In fact, a large number of breast augmentation patients are merely women attempting to recover physically from losses resulting from bouts with breast cancer.  So, do not assume when you hear the term, breast augmentation, that it is synonymous with enlargement.

Plastic surgery also often applies to a number of other bodily procedures that can be almost too subtle to notice, except for those who know the patient or specifically look for changes.  For example, a number of women struggling to lose weight following pregnancies undergo slight liposuction procedures in order to shed extra pounds and get back to their pre-pregnancy bodies.  Similarly, it is not uncommon for people who have recently lost significant amounts of weight to have ‚ tummy tucks‚ or ‚ lifts‚ in order to do away with excess skin that can be left behind after excess weight stretches the body.

All of the procedures listed above are fairly basic and quite common.  Ultimately, you can see that the stereotype that says plastic surgery is ‚ fake‚ or artificial is an unfair one.  In many cases, undergoing appearance-changing surgery is more about small adjustments than dramatic shifts; and, in many cases, it is simply the final step in a healthy physical shift.  If you are curious about a specific type of procedure, you will want to do more research online.  For now, however, you may be at ease that you are neither alone nor wrong to be thinking about it.
