The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine, M.D.

I’m a firm believer that knowledge is key. I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but with knowledge you can solve almost any problem by seeing the issue from a new perspective. A lot of the times our ignorance is what blocks us from moving forward. Hence, why I’m totally obsessed with education myself. And it doesn’t have to be a new degree. Knowledge can come from a new friend, a webinar or even a book.

I recently picked up a book titled The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine, M.D. People that saw the book cover thought I was crazy! But I didn’t care since I was learning so much. Dr. Brizendine is a Yale- and Harvard-trained psychiatrist who specializes in  relationship dynamics that result from the neurobiology of male and female brains. In her book The Female Book she explains how, based on extensive research, women’s brains are actually formed differently making us more empathetic, intuitive, and even moody, than men. Each chapter addresses a different stage in a woman’s life (like birth brain, teenage brain, mommy brain, and mature brain), as well as several other subjects (like sex and emotion). I was amazed to learn that a lot of the emotions we feel growing up (little girls being bossy, or teenage girls absolutely needing to socialize) is actually because our brain forms that way.

One of my favorite lines from the book was “biology can hijack circuits in spite of our best intentions.”  But after reading this book, I’m able to understand why I react to certain situations, or why my daughter does, or why my friends do. It’s a roadmap to understanding the connection between or feelings and our chemical makeup.

If you’ve ever caught yourself wondering, “why am I feeling this way” you must pick up The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine, M.D. And in case you’re wondering, yes, there will be a The Male Brain coming out soon. Watch out guys, we may very soon know all your secrets!

Send me a tweet and let me know what your favorite part of the book was.

xoxo,

Loren
