Being honest is something that doesn’t necessarily come second nature to many people.  More specifically, being honest to yourself and to people you care about.  Being a person that constantly craves attention, I tend to latch on to people that show me attention more often…. and with time we all know what that leads to… developing a little more than feelings for that person- especially if you’re attracted to them.

It starts becoming hard to be around them because you suddenly feel like all the roads have aligned and that this is someone you could see yourself being with, dating, in a relationship with? Who are you kidding? I was hit hard with reality twice this week when I decided to be honest with myself, and with two friends that had never been anything more- but that of course I was gripping to a sad idea that in the future there may be something more.

I opened up my heart, threw it out on the table for the taking, and while it hurt to hear at first, I needed these two friends to tell me flat out that they were not attracted to me and that nothing more would ever come from our friendship.

I learned that what I’d done was something not many men or women do in their lives, and that’s take a chance with your heart; something that takes more guts, heart and trust than anything. I was strong, a bit vulnerable but most importantly honest.

It’s like a weight has lifted off my shoulders though, I don’t feel compelled to satisfy my fantasy (of a future with one of them) by pursuing them.  Sadly, it’s something that I should do with a couple more people- to help myself wipe the board and start anew. I can’t stress it enough… be honest in every relationship, let people know exactly how you feel- the way they react will actually help you learn more about them and move on.

I can’t help but think of myself at GiGi from “He’s Just Not that Into You”, except not as obsessive- really.  The one key takeaway from that movie which relates directly to this is that if someone is interested in talking to you they will make the move, contact you and let you know. I only hope that after reading this you become more honest, and we can ALL start taking chances with someone we may be more than just interested in.

Life shouldn’t be about searching aimlessly for love, but stumbling through whatever comes your way.
